ABOUT MATT

Matt grew up in south west England, discovering his passion for climbing on the region’s rich diversity of granite sea cliffs and limestone outcrops such as Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills of Somerset.

Exploring the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland with his father opened his eyes to the mountains and all they could offer. Later, good friends shared his enthusiasm and joined him on the way. Run-out traditional protected climbs on rock and tough winter trips in Scotland fueled his interest in rock and mixed climbing. It was on this challenging terrain Matt found his true passion.

Matt’s success demonstrates the benefits of his dedication to intensive training and thorough preparation. On rock he’s red-pointing F8c+, Head pointed E9, onsighted E7 and V11 boulders. in winter he’s climbed WI7, on-sighted Scottish winter IX/9, Alpine ED4’s and established 70+ alpine first ascents from the Alps to the Greater Ranges some of which gained Piolet d'or nominations. He excels in all climbing’s disciplines as an all-round mountain athlete.

In 2001 Matt was awarded 'Denali Pro Mountaineer of the Year' for assisting in the rescue of climbers stuck in a storm at 6000m on Denali. Matt is an IFMGA Mountain Guide and climbs professionally all year round, planning his climbing projects to match the seasons.
