Matt grew up in south west England, discovering his passion for climbing on the region’s rich diversity of granite sea cliffs and limestone outcrops such as Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills of Somerset.
Exploring the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland with his father opened his eyes to the mountains and all they could offer. Later, good friends shared his enthusiasm and joined him on the way. Run-out traditional protected climbs on rock and tough winter trips in Scotland fueled his interest in mixed climbing. It was on this challenging terrain Matt found his true passion.
Matt’s success demonstrates the benefits of his dedication to intensive training and thorough preparation. His fell running endurance, mountain craft and off-piste skiing, as well as his success at red-pointing 8b+, running it out on traditional E7 and on-sighting Scottish winter IX/9 sets him apart - he excels at all climbing’s disciplines: Matt is a top all round mountain athlete.
Having developed his skills in the UK and the Alps, Matt began climbing further afield in South America, Alaska and the Himalayas. His goals in these greater ranges have always been to succeed on first ascents, some of which gained Piolet d'or nominations.
In 2001 Matt was awarded 'Denali Pro Mountaineer of the Year' for assisting in the rescue of climbers stuck in a storm at 6000m on Denali. Matt is an IFMGA Mountain Guide and climbs professionally all year round, planning his climbing projects to match the seasons.
